Belt Drive
The state of the art Gates high-modulus synchronous belt and sprocket system for bicycles called the “Carbon Drive System” is featured on Scott’s Sub10 bike for 2012.
Belt drive developed first in the early 80′s took a major leap forward beginning in 2007 when the Gates Corporation started development of a belt with a pitch design allowing lower belt tension which greatly improved belt drive’s overall function. Scott’s use of the best technology available is consistent with their quality-first philosophy.
The lightweight carbon fiber components of the system means no rust, no lubrication, which leads to a clean system that requires little maintenance and enjoys long life. The extremely smooth “Carbon Drive System” mated with the Shimano Alfine internal gearing on the Sub10 makes for an extremely quiet ride.
Belt drive is here to stay and as prices have come down these systems are now very accessible. You can see the Scott Sub10 with belt drive today at Wayne & Pam’s (pictured model priced at $1399.95).
